Poems

Simplification
if it can be said
in seventeen syllables
then it will be heard

Amplification
boil technical soup
down to teaspoon of sauce that
readers can digest

Communication
wide webs of weak links
do not catch flies as well as
three short and strong lines

MITRE's Tenth Annual Technology Symposium (2003) was also MITRE's First Annual Haiku Competition. The Technology Symposium showcases demos and posters on research being performed under the MITRE Technology Program. The Haiku Competition challenges MITRE researchers to capture the essence of their work in a disciplined yet poetic form:

Haiku Formula
it begins with five
then seven syllables and
it ends with five more

We found this to be a good  way of simplifying, amplifying and communicating our research to others. Our entry was a web page of Haiku Hyperlinks, which is now the new Home page for Mental Models.
